Understanding Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior used by one person to gain power and control over another in an intimate relationship. Abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of age, socioeconomic status, or gender.

Types of Domestic Violence:

Physical Abuse – Hitting, slapping, strangulation, pushing, or using weapons
Emotional Abuse – Humiliation, intimidation, manipulation, and gaslighting
Financial Abuse – Controlling money, preventing employment, or stealing assets
Sexual Abuse – Forced sexual acts, coercion, or reproductive control
Psychological Abuse – Stalking, isolation, threats, or intimidation
Coercive Control – Restricting freedom, monitoring activities, or enforcing dependency

If you recognize any of these behaviors in your relationship, you may be in a domestic violence situation. Legal options are available to help you escape and protect yourself.

Steps to Remove Yourself from Domestic Violence

Leaving an abusive relationship can be dangerous, but careful planning and support can help ensure your safety.

1. Recognize the Signs & Trust Yourself

Many survivors feel doubt, fear, or confusion about their situation. If you feel controlled, manipulated, or unsafe, trust your instincts and seek help.

2. Document the Abuse

✔ Keep a journal detailing instances of abuse, including dates and times
✔ Take photos of injuries, property damage, or threatening messages
✔ Save text messages, emails, or voicemails from the abuser
✔ Collect witness statements if safe to do so

3. Develop a Safety Plan

✔ Identify safe places where you can go if you need to leave quickly
✔ Pack an emergency bag with essentials like cash, ID, medications, and important documents
✔ Arrange a safe word with a trusted friend or family member to signal distress
✔ Plan your exit carefully—leaving is often the most dangerous time for survivors

4. Seek Legal Protection

Consider filing for a protection order – this legal option prevents the abuser from contacting you, but seek legal advice as to whether it will help or hurt in your situation.
Modify child custody arrangements – If children are involved, legal steps can be taken to ensure their safety.
File for divorce or legal separation – Our firm helps survivors end abusive marriages safely and legally.
